Lesson 5 Electrons
Electron Configurations: all elements want to have a complete outer shell (valence shell) and look like a Noble Gas (group 18)
Periodic Table shows ground state configuration for each element.
Ex: C 2-4
Ex: C 2-4
Electron Configuration for Ground State
Mg
Cl
Ne
Electron shells and energy: shells increase in energy as you move further from nucleus (PEL 4 > PEL 2)
Ground State: electrons will fill shells closest to the nucleus first (look at PT)
Excited State: one or more electrons move to higher energy levels before lower levels are filled.

Excited State: one or more electrons move to higher energy levels before lower levels are filled.
Bright Line Spectrum: energy is released as electrons return to the ground state from the excited state.
*Each element produces its own spectrum that can be used to identify it.
*All spectral lines must be present in order for the element to be part of a mixture.
